八仙素食 (Koufu - Toa Payoh central)

Long time didn't visit 8 Immortals at Koufu Toa Payoh, didn't see my favourite Ngian Toufu available but on its special menu was Mock Mutton Herbal Soup. Hence, decided to try. A big bowl with strong herbal taste, quite worth the $5 with brown rice ($4.50 if white rice) for the quality. Oh I do feel energised after taking the big bowl of soup, I would recommend for those who are not used to taking tonic soup to share.

The foodcourt is located above NTUC opposite OCBC bank at 2nd level.

Tian Yuan Vegetarian

Prawn soup noodles, the best soup base with most resemblance to the actual version and the lady boss is happy to share the secret if you ask her. Replacing with yellow noodles, spaghettis is used to make it a more healthier dish. Should try if you are an vegetarian and misses prawn soup noodles...

This Vegetarian Supply Shop - Tian Yuan is hidden at level 2 (#02-23) of Fortune centre, right on 2nd stretch of shops up from the escalator. It takes a bit of effort to look for it but luckily it has a bright sign.

一心素食 Yi Xin Vegetarian, Chinatown

Yi Xin is definitely a good vegetarian choice if the weather is not too hot at Chinatown. Visited it again and looking for something new, tried its Dry "Dao Xiao Mian", literally translated as Knife Sliced Noodles. Well, their texture is like the slightly bigger version of Ban Mian which is much better than other stalls specialising in it which I find the texture usually too thick and rough so I was pleased with their version. With well-marinated Hugh mushroom and good quantity of fresh vegetables and the mock meat, it's quite a nice dish to me. :-)

Located at a coffee-shop at 39 Temple Street, 一心素食 is just near centre of street opp Lucky Chinatown. Opening hours: 8am to 10pm Daily.

y.w.q. Vegetarian Bistro

Finally, we found Yuan Wei Quan  y.w.q Vegetarian Bistro (it's my 3rd attempt to find it) which is about 15 minutes' walk from Tai Pei Buddhist Centre (near Lavender MRT). It is located on the other corner end of same road as Tai Pei Buddhist Centre (against traffic direction) in a new building CT hub. Walk inside the building and turn left, one will see this Bistro. I saw the familiar faces of the vendor who used to manage the stall at Basement foodcourt of Toa Payoh HDB Hub before renovation.
With different menu from their stall, here the Bistro serves a good variety of Stir-fry dishes and set meals. The prices are mainly from $4 onwards.
C had a craving for Mee Goreng & I was interested to try their Tom Yam Hor-Fun ($7).
And Good choice we made. The Mee Goreng was flavourful with a resemblance to the popular Punggol Mee Goreng style and the Tom Yam was spicy and sour of right taste, very appetising with the well-fried Hor-Fun. We would definitely return for more. May it survive well...

Located at #01-07, CT Hub (new building diagonally opposite S'pore Casket:P) at the other end of road of Tai Pei Buddhist Centre. Opens 11am-9.30pm on Mon-Sat.

Bright Hill Temple

My favourite Vegetarian Yusheng is from Bright Hill Temple.
Price for Small is $22 while Large is $38.
Not only me but my carnivorous family loves it, the sauce, an important element for a nice Yusheng is flavourful and we came back for more after trying it for past few years.

Delights in Gaya, India

1st post for 2014... Vegetarian Food Delights at the Holy place~Gaya, India.

Tibet Om Café
A popular café along Tibetan Flea Market and not difficult to miss its Signboard on top of the roof of the Guesthouse.

Must Tries are their Then-Thuk (Soup Hand-made Flat pieces of noodles like our MeeHoonKuey of Ban Mian stalls found in Singapore),  Veg. Spring Roll (Hugh Wraps with vegetables), Calzone (Baked bread with stuffed vegetables), Fried rice and Pan-cakes.

Oh, simply love their Then-Thuk with good soup stock that provides warmth to our body in the cold weather and I love their Spring Roll~Well Fried. Hugh (not the small type found in S'pore) and Fulfilling.

Momo (Dumplings) are also popular among the patrons but I find their skin abit too thick for my liking.
Oh they have nice cakes too at reasonable price if you do take egg...
Love their Lemon Ginger Honey drink too, good for fighting a flu...
Oh one thing to avoid is their Spicy Belajan chilli in small metal container, that is a cause of my bad cough eruption...(but simply can't resist...)

Be Happy Café
Just in front of the Vietnamese Temple further down from Om Café is another popular café for Italian Food & coffee lovers. I like their Mushroom Pizza, well done...

Mohammed Restaurant
At 1 or 2 lanes besides Be Happy Café, going deep into the lane besides a Fujiya Green Restaurant. Their Indian cuisine such as Paneer Curry and Naan (nice authentic) and Cheese momo were nice. This is also a favourite hunt for foreigners as it has a good variety of International vegetarian options in a non-vegetarian restaurant.

Tergar Café
Located inside Tergar temple, this is a simple café that sells instant drinks and simple food such as Indian Fried noodles.
You may be interested to find Indian Fried noodles different from our Singapore Mee Goreng which again seems to be customised locally in Singapore. It is non spicy and brown sauced, more like our local Hong Kong Fried noodles. Oh, the noodles used is not yellow noodles but springy slightly thicker noodles texture than those used for Hong Kong Fried noodles. It's one of those easier to get dishes on the menu of reasonable standard. It's Fast food in consideration.

But for even better Indian Fried Noodles option, I would recommend the 2 Bhutanese restaurants (tentages) just outside the Tergar temple. The one on the left has nice spicy cream mushroom with brown rice while the one on the right serves better fried noodles.

The food found in Gaya had been dominated by Tibetan & Bhutanese culture, you can easily find them in most local eateries. In India, if you are pure vegetarians, remember to remind them not to put onion & garlic & eggs or else by default they are there...
Oh ... now I miss the morning bread, butter tea and the sweet oat drink served during tea-breaks at the Kagyu Monlam.
A glimpse of free breakfast served at Hotel Mahayana for Friends of Kagyu Monlam which I would encourage friends to join in their next visit for Kagyu Monlam as free transport and meals are provided for during the Monlam period.
I had an enjoyable time exploring Indian, Tibetan, Nepalese and Western food at Gaya this round.
The regret for this trip is not able to try their mango pudding and more local Indian dishes which I had enjoyed per last trip in 2009.
:-P
